FIRST TRIMESTER SCAN FOR DOWN SYNDROME (12-14W)

Welcome to our Prenatal Down Syndrome First Trimester Screening (12-14 Weeks) pages. We're dedicated to providing you with the knowledge and understanding necessary to make informed decisions during your pregnancy. The process of screening, and the potential outcomes, can be daunting and we're here to guide you through.

*Understanding The Screening*

Down Syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21, is a genetic disorder where a person has an extra copy of chromosome 21. This can lead to physical and mental challenges. Down Syndrome is the most common chromosomal disorder and can be identified via prenatal screening.

The First Trimester Screening is a combination of tests performed between weeks 12 and 14 of pregnancy to assess the risk for Down Syndrome. The screening is non-invasive and poses no risk to the mother or the baby. The screening involves an ultrasound scan and a simple blood test.

*The Ultrasound Scan*

The ultrasound scan, often referred to as the nuchal translucency (NT) scan, measures the fluid at the back of the baby's neck. Also, other distinct markers indicative of Down Syndrome, like nasal bone, ductus venosus flow and fetal heart rate, are studied. Higher fluid levels are commonly seen in babies with Down Syndrome.

*Blood Test*

The blood test measures the levels of two hormones (Pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) and Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)). Abnormal levels of these hormones along with the NT measurement contribute to a combined risk assessment.

*The Result*

The screening does not provide a definite diagnosis, but an estimated risk assessment. If the screening indicates a higher risk, further diagnostic tests like amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS) could be suggested to confirm the diagnosis. It's important to remember, the choice to proceed with further testing is completely up to you.

We understand that this is an emotional and potentially stressful time. Our team is always here to provide needed support, discuss your results in-depth, and answer any questions you may have.

Our approach is patient-centered, offering a safe and comfortable environment for your screening. By trusting us with your prenatal care, we in turn promise to guide you with clarity, compassion and knowledge.

Remember, the purpose of this screening is about getting more information and offering the best care. It's about preparedness, not predictions. We're with you, every step of the way!
